Jedes Jahr im Spätherbst bietet unser Institut zwei einwöchige Workshops an. Dazu laden wir jeweils externe Gäste ein. Sie haben ihre eigene, aufregende Sicht auf die Dinge, geben uns neue Werkzeuge an die Hand und öffnen den Diskurs an unserem Institut.

Zusammen mit unseren Gästen wählen wir ein Thema oder einen Begriff, um den sich die Woche dreht.

Diesmal, im Wintersemester 2022, geht es um die Ecken. Ohne Ecken kein Haus, keine Stadt, keine Architektur. Die Ecke ist der Gordische Knoten der Architektur. Sie kann allerdings nicht durchgeschlagen, sondern muss entwurflich und tektonisch gelöst werden. Der Richtungswechsel der Graden, der Wendepunkt der Kurve, der Knick der Fläche, die Fassung des Raumes haben ihren Ursprung in der Ecke. Kurzum: Die Ecke definiert die räumliche Dimension.

In zwei Gruppen arbeiten wir an Ecken — in Graz, in der Werkstatt, in der Stadt, drinnen und draußen, praktisch und experimentell. Eine Gruppe wird von Emilie Appercé und Leo Bettini Oberkalmsteiner aus Zürich geleitet. Die andere von Giulio Marchetti und Giorgio Scanelli von HPO aus Ferrara.

Emilie Appercé is a Paris – Zürich based architect, educated both at the EAVT Paris-Est, and Accademia di Architettura, Mendrisio where she graduated in 2014. Since 2012 she has worked for Miller & Maranta in Basel, Francesca Torzo in Genova and Caruso St John in Zürich. She joined the Chair of Prof. Adam Caruso at the ETH Zürich in 2019 as a studio/diploma teaching assistant. She is part of the editorial team working on the project womenwritingarchitecture.org initiated by Helen Thomas in 2021, an online annotated bibliography that addresses issues of gender parity in architectural education and cultural production.

Leo Bettini Oberkalmsteiner is a Zurich based Architect. After graduation from the Technical University of Munich, Germany in 2016 he started investigating public space in refugee camps. This gave birth to the project Maidantent, a covered square to carry out public activities build 2017 in Ritsona, Greece. In addition to the concept of public as urban essentiality of built space, Leo is interested in the public as an intellectual platform. Therefore he is part of the editorial board of the architecture magazine “Planphase” since 2012 and founded the periodical titled “Superposition” in 2020. Currently he is working as a lecturer at the chair of Prof. Andrea Deplazes at the ETH in Zürich and independently as well as collectively as practicing architect.

HPO is a community of architects based in Ferrara, Italy. Founded in 2017 to escape academic boundaries and face the labour market, HPO has since worked across different scales of intervention keeping a collaborative and performative attitude, while addressing multiple spatial issues through events, design and architecture. Participants to the workshop will tackle the theme of the „Ecken“ by investigating the tension, physical and emotional, produced by this architectural element. The collective work will lead through different phases to an 1:1 scale outcome.
